Chain Chronicles Haecceitas no Hikari First Impression

Chain Chronicles is the first anime of 2017 that I’ve watched and I must say that so far it’s been pretty impressive. the very first episode starts off with a bang and has so much action that I was left a bit lost. The first 6 minutes had me wondering what the hell I was watching it was nothing but pure action, I legitimately thought I was watching the anime version of Fire Emblem because I’m pretty sure I saw Corin or one of the other characters from Fire Emblem Awakening, hell I was pretty sure I saw some Final Fantasy characters. The show overall seems as though it will have a good variety of characters, some characters remind me of one’s from other shows and games.

The animation is very solid and looks beautiful the only things that I don’t like about the animation is the use of CGI in some scenes it makes it seem a little half assed at times especially when the characters in the background are made using CGI. The use of light and shadows on the characters faces just doesn’t look right at times it will make one side of their face far too bright and the other side looks a bit too dark at times. The way that the setting is drawn is so beautiful Mainly the forests like areas, the light reflecting off the water is also all so beautiful. One big problem with the show is that during fight scenes they make everyone who isn’t Arum and Yuri weak although by the time episode 4 hits you do get to see some other characters fighting more. The show also has very good voice acting and none of the characters have annoying voices.

Overall the first episode does pretty much nothing more than catch your attention although it does give you the basics regarding the plot. Basically the plot is about Yuri (not the nigga from Yuri on Ice) and the Volunteer army trying to stop the Black King from launching the world into darkness. The plot seems pretty basic and generic but the characters are pretty interesting especially the guy Arum who looks like Bell Cranel 2.0 and damn sure fights like it. The relationship between him and Yuri definitely has the potential of making the two characters more human. One thing that I wish the show did was put a little more focus on characters who aren’t named Juliana, Yuri, & Arum because there’s quite a sizeable and diverse cast of characters. The size of the cast of characters is a potential problem because it may treat many characters the way Fairy Tail treats its characters meaning that outside of the few main characters they’ll be little to no development.

There does seem to be a little romance developing between Yuri and Phoena (wifey). I would like to see the show take advantage of that and possibly put Phoena in the spotlight a bit more because she feels like a background character and you know she wifey you gotta give wifey some screentime.
Overall Chain Chronicles is a good anime and it’s best fit for people that like Action/Fantasy anime. So far I’d give it a 8/10 with the only problems being that it focuses too much on one set of characters and almost ignores the rest of the cast. The only other problem is that use of CGI. If you have the time you should definitely watch the show.

Sword Art Online Apparently Gets a 3rd Season

So apparently SAO: Ordinal Scale dropped without my knowing and there was a surprise at the end. First off let me say that I swear that I thought the movie was supposed to drop in March. Secondly I don’t understand why the show getting a 3rd season is a suprise to some people, after all the Alicization arc has yet to be covered in the show.

But back to news, the third season was apparently revealed after the credits of Ordinal Scale. The third season will most likely contain both the Girl Ops & Alicization arcs which I believe are the last two for the series. Hopefully Klein gets more screen time this time around because he was pretty entertaining in Extra Edition & the Caliber arc.

(After going through the source article a second time I realized that the viewers were viewing an advanced screening)

Blizzy’s 7 most anticipated spring 2017 anime

Recently I’ve started getting back on that anime grind and I’ve managed to watch some shows from this year which is much better than last year. With the Spring season just around the corner O thought that it’d be a good idea to make a list of the anime that I’m most hyped for this season, this list won’t contain any OVA’s or movies.

7) Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho

Synopsis:It was the year 526. The world knew that witches existed, and that they practiced the notorious art of sorcery. Nevertheless, the world did not know anything about the study of magic. Our story follows a half-man, half-beast mercenary; humans mockingly call his kind the “fallen beasts.” He always dreamt of becoming a human, but one day, he met a witch who would change his life forever. “Do you desire a human form? Then be my escort, mercenary!” The witch introduced herself as “Zero,” and explained that she was searching for a one-of-a-kind magical tome that bandits had stolen from her lair. Entitled “The Book of Zero,” the grimoire supposedly contained valuable magical knowledge that could be used to effortlessly bring the world to its knees. Thus, in order to realize his dream of becoming a human, the mercenary must accompany Zero on her journey—despite her being one of the witches he so loathed. This is the story of a haughty sorceress and a kindhearted beast. -source (Livechart.me)

This show makes my list because it seems as if it’s going to have a deep story and good characters hopefully it all pans out and it proves to be a dope anime.

6) Clockwork Planet

Synopsis: Everyone on the Clockwork Planet considers Naoto Miura a machinery nut. Every moment of every day, he has his mind on gears and his hands tinkering with delicate mechanical motors, but nobody understand how he can hear and feel gears in operation, even from a long distance away. Then one day, a clockwork maiden falls from the sky, presaging events that would shake the whole world… (Source Livechart.me)

All I’m gonna say is that this anime is on that RPG sounding shit like Final Fantasy and I love anime and games like that, hopefully the show isn’t basic and has some depth to it.

5)Boruto: The Next Generation

If you know anything about me then you know I grew up watching Naruto so it’s a give in that I’m gonna watch Boruto.

4) Sakurada Reset

Synopsis: The story is set in a town called Sakurada, where almost half the population possess some form of special powers. The story centers on two high school students. Kei Asai has the ability to perfectly remember anything he sees and hears, while Misora Haruki can turn back or “reset” time for a maximum of three days. Both students are members of their school’s “Service Club,” which their town’s administration bureau uses to observe people with powers and protect the peace. By using their powers together (Kei can remember things even when time has been reset), they solve cases for the club. Kei learns of the “MacGuffin” stone, which looks like a worthless black stone, but in reality will turn out to be the stone upon which the existence of Sakurada will hinge on. (Source Livechart.me)

I love supernatural anime and the fact that the plot centers around a small town where the inhabitants have powers is pretty interesting. The show reminds me of Code Lyoko because they’re able to reset time.

3) Re: Creators

Synopsis: Humans have created many stories. Joy, sadness, anger, deep emotion. Stories shake our emotions, and fascinate us. However, these are only the thoughts of bystanders. But what if the characters in the story have “intentions”? To them, are we god-like existences for bringing their story into the world? Our world is changed. Mete out punishment upon the realm of the gods. In Re:CREATORS, everyone becomes a Creator. (Source ANN)

2) Frame Arms Girls

Based on Kotobukiya’s Frame Arms Girl model kit line. The anime will focus on Gourai, the first model released for the line, as well as Stylet and Baselard (source MAL)

love Mecha anime so I pretty much have to include this show, the only thing that I’m worried about is that there’s gonna be a good amount of fan service which is a huge turn off for me but then again I did watch Infinite Stratos.

1) Seikaisuru Kado

Synopsis: Kojirou Shindou. Cabinet Office Director-General for Policy Planning, is at Haneda Airport for a business trip. While the plane is on the runway, a giant structure suddenly appears out of thin air. The plane carrying Shindou and 251 passengers is taken undamaged inside the giant structure. After everyone disembarks, a man who looks like an ordinary human being shows up. He assures those from the plane that they’re not in any danger. Shindou asks him to identify himself and explain the situation. Then the outside of the structure is displayed on a large screen, and at the same time, every passenger’s cell phone starts ringing all at once. On each cell phone screen is a message from this man, to every one of Japan’s citizens: “I, Yaha-kui za Shunina, hereby notify you that I am going to intervene in Japan’s internal affairs. “What is this young man’s goal? And will Shindou manage to become an intermediary between Japan and the Anisotorons…?
Let me be honest here the art Reminds me of K for some reason which had an amazing art style but delivered poorly with the plot hopefully this show’s delivery isuch better because it definitely has potential.

CrunchyRoll hits a huge milestone

Anyone that watches anime most likely knows about the very popular streaming service CrunchyRoll. Recently the streaming service has hit a milestone that sets it apart from other streaming services, CrunchyRoll has finally hit 1 million paid subscribers which makes it the most popular anime/ J- Drama specific streaming service to date.

The number is pretty small compared to some of the more well known streaming services but it shows that people are willing to pay to watch anime. CrunchyRoll does have a free version of it’s membership but it doesn’t offer the same perks that the paid membership offers. Hopefully anime streaming becomes more relevant and gets to a point where it can possibly come close to competing with some of the bigger services but that’s a bit of a stretch considering that there are other sources for it.

You can now study about anime in college

Today in weeaboo news Otakus in the united States rejoice to hear that the University of South Carolina offers a course about anime. According to the plug the course is counted as an English 101 course. The course is apparently called reading and writing about magical girls which is a creepy and cringe worthy title. Some of the course objectives are as follows

  • Understand the basic tropes and methodologies of the magical girl genre.
  • Use the genre to introduce basic tenets of feminism.
  • Question whether niche interests like anime can elaborate on theoretical questions of aesthetics versus politics in a meaningful way.
  • Connect the magical girl genre to larger questions of political importance.

Teach students how to write (this is, after all, an introductory level English course)

At first I thought that the course would be something stupid but after seeing what they’re about I must say that it’s peaked my interest.

The Problem With Sword Art Online

2012 was probably the best year for anime in recent memory. That year so many good shows were released, most notably Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan. Out of the anime that were released that Year I personally liked SAO the most even though it had many flaws. The anime had two seasons that were broken into 5 arcs and a total of around 50 episodes.

The show had some major problems that were never really addressed or solved. The main being the fact that Asuna became more of a background character as the show progressed. She was such a damn badass when she was introduced, but the second she got down with Kirito she started to look more like a cheerleader as Kirito became the focus of the show. It wasn’t until the Mother’s Rosario arc that she was beginning to look like the old Asuna.

Sword Art Online also has a bit of a habit of sidelining characters. More specifically anyone who isn’t a Mr. Kirito. There are many examples of this but I think two good examples would be Klein and Sinon. Klein was the first player Kirito really connected with. So wouldn’t Klein play a larger role in the show? Nah of course not.

Klein only appears about 4 or 5 times in the entire first season. That’s pretty crazy considering that he’s pretty close to Kirito. Klein was in extra edition and made an appearance in the GGO arc albeit a very short appearance.  The only time he was in a full arc was during the Caliber arc where he was in every episode and also provided a comedic relief.

Sinon’s situation is pretty similar to that of Asuna’s. Sinon was the main female character in the GGO arc, Sinon proved that she was an elite player and overall a pretty dope character, bUT your can’t be a dopen femailed in SAO for too long. After the GGO arc she was pretty much “put on the bench” and added to Kirito’s little harem. Even in the games she’s treated a bit like a 2nd class character who’s not very involved it even seemed as though the newer characters were more relevant than her.

A problem in many anime is the idea of “plot armor”. This problem is pretty much intensified when it comes to Kirito. A prime example is his battle against Heathcliff.

Everyone saw that Kirito and Asuna’s  health was completely depleted, but somehow both managed to survive. Even more crazy is the fact that Kirito somehow managed to comeback to life and beat Heathcliff. Another instance of this unbeatable plot armor happened in GGO when Kirito somehow managed to slice Sinon’s bullet in half even though he’d never the game before. I get that his stats from SAO carry over to GGO but I still don’t that he’d be able to dodge bullets and cut them in half especially since a FPS and an MMORPG have drastically different controls, gameplay, and mechanics.

As much as I love this character I have to say that she was cancer for a whole arc. That’s right I’m talking about the wifey Suguha a.k.a Leafa. The biggest problem with her is that she basically wanted to fuck Kirito. Now I’d applaud Kirito if it wasn’t for the fact that Suguha is his cousin, like come on she’s pretty bad that’s why she’s wifey.

The last flaw that I want to address is the horrible pacing that was in the very first arc. The pacing was just so uneven and at times skipped over several months. I understand that no one wants to see the characters…I mean Kirito’s grind just to level up but it just seems like they skipped too much time.  Luckily the pacing was much better throughout the rest of the show.

If you noticed any flaws with Sword Art Online then let me know by leaving a comment I’d be interested in hearing them.

Top 5 Anime For Non-Anime Fans

So the other day a friend of mine wanted me to recommend him an anime to watch. There happened to be one little problem though, he doesn’t really watch much anime other than Naruto, DBZ, Bleach, and FMA. So I had to figure out some anime to recommend for him, which brought up another problem, finding a normal anime. What I mean by a normal anime that isn’t going to be awkward for the average person to watch. Looking for that type of anime is quite a task but luckily I found a few that are good enough for a non anime fan our just a casual watcher to view.

    5) Ghost In The Shell

GITS is a series of movies that follow Major Motoko Kusanagi who happens to be an android. The series is very serious and is definitely capable off keeping anyone’s attention.

    4) Gangsta

Gangsta is a pretty serious anime that has plenty of action that follows the handymen (Worrick & Nicholas)who do some rather dirty and dangerous work for the cops, mafia, or anyone who’s willing to pay a good price.  Currently it only has a Japanese dub meaning that the viewers will have to read the subtitles. The only knock is that the show has characters that have some rather superhuman abilities (increased strength, Speed, etc) and the reason for it isn’t fully explained and probably won’t due to the fact that the creator has a lot of health problems, so the show may never be finished.

    3)Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon is the most normal anime on this list considering it’s lack of super powers and many other anime tropes. The show is very similar to Gangsta due to fact that the characters go around doing for hire jobs (that are illegal in nature). The show contaibs 29 total episodes broken into 2 seasons of 12 episodes and a 5 episode OVA titled Roberta’s Blood Trail. The Ova is intended to be watched after viewing both seasons.

    2)Moribito Guardian of the Spirit

Moribito is a very story driven anime that’s perfect for someone who likes deep character and story development. The show follows it’s maine heroine Balsa who’s tasked with protecting a young prince who’s father wants him killed because a spirit is in him. The show is 25 episodes long so it has a pretty decent length but it’s not too long. The next pay off this show is it’s character development and story which were both well done. Check out my Moribito review for more info on the show.

    1) Ga Rei Zero

Exorcist Swords, Spirits, Exorcist families, and exorcist girls. All of this makes it seem like this isn’t the anime that you’d want to show a casual or someone who doesn’t watch anime right? Luckily the show has great character development and a solid story meaning that pretty much anyone can enjoy it. The animation is prerty solid so it’ll be pleasing to the eyes. Another little perk is that the show is only 12 episodes long so it’s really short.

    Honorable Mentions

In my opinion this would’ve been the best show of 2012 had they finished it. That’s right the anime never finished, but the manga kept going which is really ashame.

    Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans

Any show from the Gundam series is a good starting point for anyone who’s new to anime because it’s a classuc series and it’s not as fan service heavy as many other series and it’s more serious.

    Initial D

Initial D is the Fast & Furious of anime. If you don’t mind watching an anime about Racing you should definetlu check out this one.

    Darker Than Black

Darker Than Black is an anime that I’m a bit on the fence about if you want to show someone an anime that has a well written story. DTB has an interesting story but it’s not to fleshed out. For more information you can check out my Darker Than Black review.

    Sword Art Online

SAO is an anime that seems pretty decent until you notice the the fact that Suguha pretty much wanted to fucking have sex with Kirito, who is her cousin. aThere’s lso the fact that Asuna almost got raped by those two pink slug things.

    Darker Than Black Series Review

Darker Than Black was a show that was released in 2008 and is very much mediocore the show managed to get a second season (which isn’t much.of a surprise considering ’08 was a pretty weak year). Studio Bones produced the show and it got liscened by Funimation the original run was from ’07-’09.

    Season 1

Ten years ago, “Hell’s Gate” appeared around Tokyo. This mysterious field caused the stars in the sky to disappear and extraordinary powers to awaken within humans. These humans, called Contractors, use their powers for their own ends but only at the cost of a personal remuneration. In this world of the supernatural, Hei, a Contractor himself, Yin, a blind “Doll”, and Huang, a no-nonsense enforcer, work for a mysterious syndicate bent on unlocking the secrets of Hell’s Gate and eliminating any other Contractors that get in their way.

    Season 2

After the Syndicate failed to destroy all Contractors, it is continuing its struggle to gain dominance in the dark crevices of the underworld. In order to expand its power, the organization has sent their best Contractors to acquire a powerful Contractor Shion Pavlichenko. Just as the Syndicate’s agents attempt to acquire Shion, several fierce battles takes place. Surrounded by the corpses of slain Contractors, a much worn down Hei acquires who he believes to be Shion but he soon realizes that all he has found is Shion’s twin sister, Suou.

    Animation 7.5/10

The animation is a bit dated but it still does a solid job of looking good and looking decent during action scenes. Overall it looks pretty damn good although it could be a bit smoother at certain times.

    Music 6/10

Outside of the openings and endings the music isn’t anything special. The only good ending was the ending for the Second season which was performed by abbingdon School boys

    Voice Acting 8/10

In both the English and Japanese dubs the VA was pretty damn good with Mao and November 11th having the best VA’s in season one and Hei having the best VA in season two. (Due to a lack of non-sterotypical voices) I will say that the VA that played Hei sounded a bit flat.

    Characters 4/10

The characters in Darker Than Black are pretty flat although they had some interesting backgrounds, especially Suou in season two. Had they jumped on these back stories the show would’ve been at least two times better.

    What I Liked

The fights in this anime were almost reminiscent of X-men sure too the contractors having varying abilities and varying skill sets. Even though the animation it’s dated it still looks good and fits the show.

    What I Hated

(Yes this is done differently from what I liked, this is because I’m debating on which format I prefer)

    • The show never goes much into the characters back stories much only giving a brief overview
    • The lack of good music
    • The lack of personality that plauged most of the characters

    Rating 6.5/10

Overall the show was pretty decent but there will be some questions left unanswered when you finish the show. I recommend watching the OVAs before you watch the second season because it will clear up some questions about Yin. If you like action supernatural anime then this anime is a go just be wary that the story is a little weak

Anime Theory: The Problems With Black Lagoon’s Japanese Dub

Black Lagoon is one of my favorite anime even beating out childhood classics like DBZ, Yugioh, and Avatar. The action is glorious and the voice acting is solid, the show has very few flaws but there is one major flaw that everyone seems to overlook. That flaw is that Black Lagoon really shouldn’t have a japanese dub. I know what you’re thinking “how can an anime not have a Japanese dub” or “what madness are you speaking of”, and to that I say “does it really make sense for characters who have no connection to japan to speak japanese?”

Many of the characters have little to no education

With the exceptions of Benny and Rock just about no one else in the show has a college level education, and coupled with the fact most of the characters haven’t even been to a Japanese speaking country not even once ( with the exception of Rock).

    The Language Barrier

Now tell me how the fuck a russian, a chinese girls, an uneducated woman (Revy), and a bunch of criminals magically know Japanese. I mean come on it sounds like a bad bar joke. The only way everyone really could communicate is by speaking English. Hell when Balalaika went to Japan she specifically brought Rock as a Translator, but she’s spoken in Japanese before.

    Lack of Education

This is something that majority of the characters don’t have (anytype of education sbove fucking middle school). Given that a lot of the characters grew up poorer than niggas in South Chicago I imagine that it would be difficult for them to read let alone comprehend a foreign language. (Mabey they’d learn it if they watched anime)

    The Time

Black Lagoon takes place during the 70-80’s so the only way for them to really learn another language would’ve been to read a book that teaches it because there wasn’t YouTube or Rosetta Stone. There also don’t seem to be any libraries in roanaper (I know I butchered the spelling) and even if there were I bet that they’re involved in weapons or drug trafficking. There also wasn’t a need for them to speak it since the common language seemed to be violence.

Overall the Japanese dub wasn’t bad it was actually good, but the real reason it exist is just for the Japanese people ecen though all signs point out that none of the characters (excluding Rock) can’t speak Japanese. I hope you enjoyed me fucking around trying to sound intelligent (more like an off brand MattPat), if so then follow the site and follow us on Twitter @TheAnikatsuki.
